POWERCHINA finishes construction on Zongo Hydropower Station in Congo

The inauguration ceremony for the Zongo Hydropower Station in the Congo was held on June 22 and was witnessed by Congo president Joseph Kabila and Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala, as well as some 1,000 locals, representatives of private organizations and company staff.

At the ceremony, the Congo Minister of Water Resources and Energy noted that the Zongo Hydropower Station was the largest hydropower plant to be built in the Congo in the past three decades and has not only brought job opportunities but also saved the country from an energy crisis.

The project was of great significance to the power system in western Congo, alleviating pressure on the capital city of Kinshasa's power grid and advancing the country’s social and economic growth.

In addition to cutting the ribbon for the project, the president also visited the factory buildings, control room and dam. While being introduced to the project, he praised the station for its advanced technologies, which are expected to inject new energy into the Congo’s economy.

Located in southeastern Congo, the 150MW hydropower station began construction in 2012 and has attracted much attention since then. The Congo's president inspected the project three times while the Chinese Ambassador to the Congo and counsellor of the Economic and Commercial Counsellor's Office in the Congo also visited the construction site multiple times.

Contracted by POWERCHINA, the project was also beneficial for the company in expanding its brand influence in the Congo and other countries in Central Africa.
