Gaokao is no ordinary test in China, as someone may say it is a life-defining test for many young people.

We've brought together a couple of excellent gaokao scorers in Northeast China's Jilin province of this year, in the hope of finding out the secrets of success from them.

Ma Cheng - Jilin's excellent gaokao scorer in arts

Ma is a graduate of the high school affiliated with Jilin University and got a 660 in gaokao, with 147 in math, 118 in Chinese, 145 in English 145, 250 in arts (politics, history and geology).

Preferred school: Peking University

Secret of success: Ma studies efficiently and finishes all her homework superbly and has made an effort to improve in her weak courses, always maintaining a positive attitude. Interests: Fiction such as Liu Cixin's “The Three-Body Problem", a sci-fi trilogy, and popular youth stories, and TV shows.

Mother and father: They offer opinions on certain things but leave Ma enough space to make her own decisions, and also teach her to be independent in life.

Her teacher: She's a happy girl, independent and mature, with a strong sense and ability in learning by herself. And she knows herself very well, meaning, she understands her strengths and weaknesses

 

Yang Meiyan - excellent gaokao scorer in arts

Yang's a graduate of Yanbian High School No.1 and got 692 on the gaokao. Preferred school: Either Tsinghua or Peking University.

Learning methods: She doesn't just memorize subjects, such as history, politics and geography, but tries to understand the content in her own way through note-taking. She speaks less, but does more, and always says, "Make it happen".

Interests: Classics from China and abroad and listening to music. Yang has read the works of Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac and Lu Xun.

Parents: They've never forced her to study and have put no pressure on her. Teachers: Yang has a very strong will. She’s smart, considerate and independent.

 

 

 

 

Liu Mohan - excellent gaokao scorer in science

Liu is a graduate of the high school affiliated with Northeast Normal University and got 708 in gaokao, with 148 in Math, 127 in Chinese, 147 in English, and 286 in Science.

Ideal school: Peking University or Tsinghua Management School.

Secret of success: Going over mistakes from time to time, and being efficient in studies. Interests: reading and writing novels, listening to music.

Parents: "We never worry about her because she knows what she wants and has clear goals. She's very self-disciplined."

 Teachers: "Very smart, mature and full of potential. Chinese is her strong point, practically perfect."

 

 

Song Qinxiang - high gaokao grades in science

Song is a graduate of a Korean middle school in the city of Jilin and got 712 in gaokao. Expected school: Tsinghua University.

Interests: listening to music and drawing

Study habits: Go over books from time to time, and turn to teachers for help for something really complicated. Also make good use of time in class and maintain a good attitude toward learning.

Parents: "A smart, but introverted girl. She knows how to learn and when to learn, and we see she plays all the time."

Teacher: "She learns very fast and is efficient."

 

 

Li Muyang - top scorer in science

Li is a graduate of the high school affiliated with Northeast Normal University and got 710 in gaokao, with 147 in Math, 124 in Chinese, 146 in English and 288 in Science.

Preferred school: Peking University.

Interests: hip-hop, watching TV, studying English. She also has her own online music channel with 7,000 subscribers.

Secret of success: always maintain a good mood.

Parents: "We give her a certain amount of freedom and trust her. She's well-organized and self-disciplined. "

Teachers: "She's full of thoughts, responsible, hardworking, and talks with us often."

 

Yu Ziyue - high top scorer in science

Yu is a graduate of the high school affiliated with Jilin University and got a 710 in gaokao, with 145 in Math, 122 in Chinese, 147 in English and 291 in Science.

Preferred schools: Peking University Guanghua School of Management.

Interests: Playing the piano and saxophone and playing video games.

Secret of success: Follow the teacher's lectures closely and do more exercises after class. Work harder for better results.

Parents: "He's very thoughtful, a good planner and always takes action."
