Companies need to do more for employee child care

2016-01-29

At the recent Jilin provincial People's Congress meeting, on Jan 26, one delegate said that enterprises, especially State-owned ones, need to provide affiliated nurseries to help staff members if they have to care for a second child.

In supporting his view, Guo Naishuo pointed to the fact that people are concerned about the high cost of having a child and the lack of government support, so "If [they] felt secure because of government support, there would be more couples wanting to have a second child."

Guo went on to say, "One sensible solution is to get SOEs to open a nursery to help care for the child especially since most of them had one back in the 1980s, and, in most cases, the first child is taken care by the grandparents, so they're overburdened if they have to look after a second one and a nursery could take part of the responsibility."
