About Jilin Province

Jilin Province is situated in the central part of northeast China. It borders with Russia to the east and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the southeast. It overlooks Japan and the Republic of Korea across the sea. Jilin Province covers an area of approximately 187,400 square kilometers has around 27.5 millions of people. The figure of GDP was 1,298.15 billion yuan($212.12 billion) in the year 2013. Changchun, the capital city, is the center of politics, economy, science, education, culture, finance and transportation in the province.

Being one of the important industrial bases in China, the province has three pillar industries, known as automotive, petro-chemical, and agricultural food processing. Jilin Province has unparalleled agricultural conditions because the province is located on one of the world three "golden corn belts" with fertile soil, which is nicknamed "the hometown of black soil". As a result, the grain output volume of the province in 2013 was 35.51 million metric tons, which ranks the fourth place in all the provinces in China.

Meanwhile, Jilin Province is also advanced for science, technology and education. There are 110 research institutes in the province including the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Machinery and Physics, and Changchun Institute of Allied Chemistry affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences. And there are 58 universities and colleges such as Jilin University, one of the top ten universities in China. By the end of 2013, there are 23 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Jilin Province is a pilot province for ecological construction at the state level. There are 44 national forest reserves in the province and the forest coverage rate of the province reaches 43.9 percent.

Jilin Province is abundant for many mineral resources, such as, oil shale, aedelforsite, cinder, etc. Furthermore, Jilin Province has extraordinary mineral water resources, which took the top position in China in terms of its quantity and quality.
