Port city embraces tourism boom over National Day holiday

Zhangjiagang, a port city in East China's Jiangsu province, saw a tourism boom over the National Day holiday from Oct 1 to 7.

A total of 1.08 million passenger trips were made in the city. Official data show that the passengers were mainly traveling to or from northern Jiangsu province, Shanghai and Zhejiang province.

According to the city's commercial bureau, which monitored six key commercial retail enterprises and three commercial complexes, sales rose 1.8 percent year-on-year to 115 million yuan ($16.7 million).

The city's scenic spots also received crowds of tourists during the holiday. Accordingly, its eight scenic areas, including Fenghuang Mountain and Xiangshan Mountain, welcomed nearly 70,000 tourists, pushing revenue up 55.7 percent year-on-year.

Jiyang Lake Ecological Park proved to be the most popular scenic area. The number of tourists hit 125,000 during the seven-day holiday.

Yonglian Agricultural Park also attracted many tourists with some exciting projects such as an animal parade and acrobatic performances.

Many visitors chose to enjoy their holiday in the city's many libraries. The city’s cultural center library received a total of 17,259 readers, while the children's palace welcomed 9,306 youngsters.

Several poetry activities were also held in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic China.
