The city of Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province has seen strong performance in import and export growth over the first four months this year, according to the local customhouse.

The export volume of garments and accessories reached 5.05 billion yuan ($770 million), up 14.2 percent. For mechanical and electrical products, the number was 4.7 billion yuan, a 4.9 percent increase. The export volume of steel, garments, and mechanical and electrical products account for 60 percent of the total export volume.

For imports, the city brought in soybeans worth 6.77 billion yuan from January to April, an increase of 1.6 times and making up a quarter of the total import volume. The import volume of mechanical and electrical products, wool and high-tech products, respectively, reached 20, 14 and 7 billion yuan, up 26, 4 and 7 percent from last year.

A healthy economy spurred the growth of bulk commodities. The import volume of coal and lignite broke 1 million tons worth over 500 million yuan. For edible vegetable oil, the number tripled from last year.

The general trade volume broke 40 billion yuan accounting for 77 percent of the total number, which signals that the city is getting close to a more reasonable trading model.

Due to the stable demand in the international market right now, the city's garment exports will maintain relatively steady growth in the future, said Wang Fei, deputy chief of the customhouse.
