The development of Shuangshan Island tourism is one of the key projects in Zhangjiagang of Jiangsu province. The project is expected to end at the end of April.

Shuangshan South Port is the only entrance to the island, and will give visitors the first impression of the resort. In November 2013, the new port opened to the public.

Zhang Jianhua, head of the planning department of Shuangshan Island Resort, said they rebuilt the port into a four-story building with an area of 5,100 square meters and an investment of 30 million yuan ($4.83 million).

Previously, people and vehicles used the same lane, now lanes are separated to enhance safety, said Chen Zhengde, a resident on the island. A parking lot was built allowing 150 vehicles to park. An intelligent management system will be set up at the port for vehicles to pass the port entrance by electronic scanning.

Gates and residences of Laojie Street on the island are also being rebuilt, all in a traditional style.

“Fourty-two families live on the 300-meter long street, and we built their houses in the styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties with wooden pillars, grey tiles and windows carved with flowers,” said Zhang Jianhua.

A river will be included in the rebuilding project of Laojie Street. Zhang said water will be introduced from the Yangtze River and will keep flowing. The depth is 20-30 centimeters all year round. The matching plants and fish will be added into the river.
