Zhangjiagang will offer to give vehicle owners subsidies if they get rid of their old cars some time after March 1, 2014.

The move aims to improve air quality as emissions from old automobiles are always more serious.

Owners of gasoline vehicles registered before December 31, 2000 and diesel engine vehicles registered before December 31, 2007 will be able to get subsidies.

However, there are three prerequisites. First, the vehicle has to be registered in Zhangjiagang, in Jiangsu province. Second, the owner has to have their vehicles disassembled between January 1, 2011 and October 31, 2015, and appliy for de-registration. Third, the vehicle has to be written off one year ahead of the regulated date, and not because it has been involved in an accident.
