On October 11 in Shaxi ancient town, 13 members of the Taicang Chinese Opera Amateur Association, also known as the Pingjushangyuequn group, gave a well-received performance for hundreds of seniors in honor of the Double Ninth Festival.

The whole performance lasted more than two hours and consisted of 18 classic opera pieces, including the Shaoxing opera He Wenxiu and Shanghai opera Thunderstorm. Ding Ning acted beautifully as Yan Lanzhen in the Shaoxing opera Panfu. Huang Mei sang the Shanghai opera Canary by heart, deeply moving many people. The dramatic Huai opera Buy Youtiao (fried dough) was also very popular.

The cast consisted of winners of the first Taicang Chinese Opera Competition, including gold award winner Huang Mei, silver award winner Hou Ying, and bronze award winners Qiu Ping and Huang Qiang. All the performers were well prepared for the show, giving senior citizens a wonderful experience.

The activity was sponsored by Taihua Restaurant, with owner Gong Wenya expressing her hope that the elderly could lead a happier and healthier life through these kinds of activities. She also attributed her success partly to government policy and support from others. She promised to hold more activities for the public in the future.
