A charity fundraising event was held recently in central Zhangjiagang city, calling for more love and care for leukemia patients and their families.

The event started on the morning of May 4 and will last until the end of May. It is organized by the city’s Charity Federation and Red Cross Society.

The money raised will help leukemia patients of Zhangjiagang city and their families impoverished by bone marrow transplants and costly long-term treatments.

Tao Jinghua, head of the social assistance division of the Zhangjiagang civil affairs bureau, said three groups of patients and their families will get the aid. First, those who need bone marrow transplants will get a one-time aid of 20,000 yuan ($3,241) each before transplants. Second, those who receive basic living allowances or are almost qualified for basic living allowances, will get 50 percent of out-of-pocket payments above 5,000 yuan refunded, up to a limit of 20,000 yuan each. Third, those who have been impoverished by the astronomical medical treatments for leukemia will receive up to 20,000 yuan each.

A donation hotline has been opened for anyone who is concerned about patients and their families. When the fundraiser ends, the use of the donation money will be made public. The city’s Charity Federation is in charge of the list of those in need.
