Zhangjiagang Port has imported a total of 490,000 tons of scrap steel, worth $190 million, in the first quarter of 2013, a 48.7-percent year-on-year growth, according to figures from the city’s entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau.

The increasing amount of scrap steel has raised requirements on quality and environmental tests.

To address the ensuing problems, Zhangjiagang’s entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau has held meetings to discuss laws, regulations and policies concerning imports of scrap steel. It has delivered the latest information on recycling scrap steel in international markets and learned of emerging problems from related departments.

To enhance the efficiency of inspection and reduce total waiting periods in loading and unloading cargos, an around-the-clock ordering system has been set up, which has gained recognition among importers.
