A seminar on the construction of Taicang as a sponge city took place in Taicang, Jiangsu province from March 1 to 2.

Experts from renowned Chinese and Japanese universities reported on their research in the construction of a sponge city and the application of recycled concrete technology.

The experts specifically detailed their work on the application of mulitipath resource recycled concrete technology to sponge city construction.

"Sponge city" is an important principle for the building of Taicang's Public Park. The park will mainly contain woods, grasslands and rivers with as few supporting facilities as possible in a bid to collect as much rainwater as possible for retention and purification.

In March last year, Taicang's housing and urban-rural development bureau inked an agreement with two Chinese universities, Tongji University and Southeast University.

The agreement states that the research results between China and Japan on the project of mulitipath resource recycled concrete technology as applied to sponge city construction will be part of the construction of Taicang's Public Park.

Therefore, all the research findings revealed at the seminar will be used in constructing the park in Taicang.

The research project is a sci-tech cooperation between Chinese and Japanese governments and project members include the University of Tokyo, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Tokushima, Tongji University, Southeast University, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute Co, Shanghai Sanme Mining Machinery Corp and Jiangsu Rongda New Material Co.
