Jiangsu Yonggang Group Co, a private steel company located in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, has transformed itself into a green company by implementing extensive environmentally friendly policies.

Maintaining sustainable ecological development has been a priority among the company's leadership. During the past five years, it has invested 4.5 billion yuan ($735.34 million) into more than 200 environmental protection projects, including solid waste and sewage treatment and dust control projects. The projects have helped reduce the amount of coal usage by 450,000 tons, reduce solid waste by 1 million tons, waste water by 4 million tons, waste gas by 9,660 tons and dust by 7,800 tons annually.

In 2014, Yonggang established an environmental management team to focus on environmental protection. Their efforts included importing environmental protection equipment, eliminating outdated devices and rolling out plans for noise control.

Brochures on environmental laws have also been distributed to all the staff members to raise their awareness of clean production.

Waste recycling has been made another priority by Yonggang. As part of this, the company focuses on recycling coal, steam, steel slag, stove ash and waste water to promote sustainable development.

In a bid to build an ecologically-friendly plant, Yonggang has planted large areas of green trees and grass to absorb more carbon dioxide, offset pollution gases, reduce noise and improve air quality, while beautifying the landscape.

Yonggang has also spared no efforts in improving its ecological surroundings. The company has built greenery belts around the plant and along the main roads for shelter against pollution, dust and sand.

Yonggang's achievements have been recognized by the authorities. As a pilot enterprise in Jiangsu province for sustainable economic development, Yonggang's environmental protection projects have been funded to the amount of 40.44 million yuan ($6.61 million) by municipal and provincial governments.

Due to its environmental protection efforts over the last five years, Yonggang has become a a prime example of a garden-like enterprise in Zhangjiagang.
