First opening ceremony rehearsal tests performers, thrills audience

The first of three dress rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the second Summer Youth Olympic Games has given a select audience a sneak preview of the spectacle that is to thrill Nanjing in just five short days.

The 90-minute event is the vision of acclaimed ceremony director and Nanjing native son Chen Weiya and his creative team - who have been working on the performance for two years from the planning to extensive training with a cast of mostly local young performers.

Last night's event revealed a mixture of Olympic ritual and artistic performance. The flagbearer's procession and Olympic oaths are followed by speeches from the president of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games organizing committee, Li Xueyong, and president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach.

On the completion of formalities, Chen presents an artistic performance that mixes tradition and technology and had last night's crowd gasping with excitement and cheering with delight until the end. Many elements of the opening ceremony will only be revealed on the night.
