This June, 270,000 tons of blue-green algae were removed from the Taihu Lake, twice as much as in 2014, according to the Jiangnan Evening News.

In spite of constant rainwater and low temperature in June, the situation didn't improve.

"The blue-green algae seemingly decreased during heavy rainfall, but they floated back up after rain stopped," a director told reporters, explaining that the algae were just diluted, instead of being swept away.

"Air pressure, temperature and wind direction directly affect blue-green algae's growth rate," the director said, "southeast wind and low air pressure in June led algae to gather along the lake bank."
