Changsha has been developing modern agriculture since getting its national modern agriculture demonstration zone, in August 2010, at a cost of 15 billion yuan ($2.42 billion). The zone has a planned space of at least 1,100 square kilometers, mainly for grain, tea, vegetables, flowers and trees. There are also rice bases in the towns of Chunhua, Lukou and Beishan, with a planned paddy area of 693 sq km of by 2015, with 90 percent of that for high-quality rice.
It also has 66.7-sq-km of tea fields in the towns of Jinjing and Gaoqiao for organic tea for building brands such as Jinjing and Jindingshan. Its green, organic vegetable bases are in the towns of Chunhua and Lukou, with a planned area of 333-sq-km area, 100-percent pollution-free, with a 50-percent green food rate. It has 66.7 sq km of flower and seedling bases and markets planned for the towns of Tiaoma, Huangxing, Ganshan, and Jiangbei by 2015, with an output value of 3 billion yuan a year.
Changsha seeks to revive porcelain production
In recent years, the local government has sought to revive the region's long tradition in porcelain making and boost local industry with the cultural influence of ancient Tongguan kilns, which have a history of 1,200 years.
