In Oct,1982, Duisburg and Wuhan became the first pair of sister cities between China and Germany.

Mr.Grisch, China's first foreign director of Wuhan Diesel Engine Works was just the expert sent by German Retired Experts Service. In 1987, Duisburg set up Duisburg - Wuhan Relationship Promotion Committee"; in 1988, Wuhan helped Duisburg to set up China Guarden of 5400m2, afterwards, both cities mutually appointed permanent delegates. Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology set up inter-university cooperation．Both cities have carried out wide exchange in such fields as culture, arts and medical treatment.
