The Liunan district of Liuzhou, in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, came in on top of all the districts and urban counties in the area of revenues in the first half of this year, with a reported 1.63 billion yuan ($265.7 million), for a rise of 28 percent year-on-year, and half of the local government’s 2013 goal.
The district says that innovation is driving its development, with the Yuxiang Rim Co being a good example. The company cooperated with Shanghai Jiaotong University in R&D and as a result its products have improved, and cost and weigh less.
The Liuzhou government has made an effort since last year to encourage companies to spend more on R&D, and, as a result, more than 20 million yuan has been used to support innovation, with as much as 400 million coming from local companies for R&D.
This strong support and better services from the local government have helped a lot of labor-intensive companies change themselves into more innovation-led companies.
And, at least 12 district companies have been rated national high-tech companies, while two others have become an engineering technology center for the region.
The district’s Hexi Industrial Park itself has been reported to have 123 companies whose total output increased 11.51 percent year-on-year, to 16.78 billion yuan, in the first half.
