Dragon boat racing at the Dragon Boat Festival

On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year is the Dragon Boat Festival.

On this day, the people in Zhaoqing have a tradition of holding dragon boat races in the urban areas of Jinli and Jindu in Gaoyao city as well as in the towns along the Xijiang River.

Each year, 40 to 50 dragon boats compete in the race. They are painted in five colors: red, yellow, green, black and white, and they have dragon heads and tails. A boat is 10 to 20m long and carries 15 to 30 paddlers.

During the race, one person beats a drum at the bow of the boat and another person knocks a gong at the stern of the boat to instruct the paddlers to row in unison. In the boat, one person holds a colorful banner and waves it in the air. The paddlers row with all their strength to the sounds of the drum and gong. Thousands of spectators cheer them on from the bank.
