An overview of Zhaoqing city

Zhaoqing is located in the west-central part of Guangdong province along the middle reaches of the Xijiang River. The city covers 15,000 square kilometers of land and has a population of about 4.04 million people. Zhaoqing administers Duanzhou and Dinghu districts, and Guangning, Deqing, Fengkai and Huaiji counties. The prefecture-level city also governs Gaoyao and Sihui county-level cities. The city also is home to the Zhaoqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

Zhaoqing has a long, rich history. It was known as Gaoyao in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) and renamed into Duanzhou in the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618). Northern Song Dynasty (AD 420-479) Emperor Huizong bestowed its current name upon the city. “Zhaoqing” means “beginning of auspiciousness”.

As a state-level historical and cultural city and the cradle of Lingnan culture, Zhaoqing is home to several provincial and national-level protected sites. Those sites include the Mei Nunnery, Song city wall, cliffside inscriptions on the Seven Star Crags, Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple in Yuecheng and the Confucian temple in Deqing. The temples have been visited by Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, and Li Yong, Bao Zheng, Tang Xianzhu, Mathew Ricci, Sun Yat-sen and Ye Ting.

The Seven Star Crags in Zhaoqing consist of mountains and lakes that form an integral body. Its mountains are as charming as those in Yangshuo. Its waters are as fascinating as those in Guilin. It has been called “the First Wonder in Lingnan”. Dinghu Mountain is high and densely covered with forest, birds and plants. It is a state-level nature reserve and has become a research station for “man and biosphere” ecology. The attractions centering on the Star Lake scenic area near the Xijiang River and the Suijiang River form a long tourist corridor. Here, you can see: Panlong Gorge, the “No 1 Rock on the Earth”, Thousand-Layer Peak, the bamboo sea in Guangning and Swallow Rock.

Zhaoqing is near Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macao and other developed areas to the east, and the city is backed by the vast southwestern region of China. It is a gateway from developed areas to the provinces in the southwestern region. No 321 and No 324 national highways and the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Railway run through the city. Xijiang River is accessible by sea. A fast and efficient multimodal traffic and transportation network consisting of highway, waterway and railway has taken shape.

Zhaoqing is rich in land, agricultural, forestry and water resources. It is home to more than 50 kinds of mineral resources, including gold and jade. The city has been called “hometown of gold” by Guangdong province and also "city of the ink slab in China”.
