Zhanjiang unveils design for its International Airport

Updated: 2017-09-08

Design for the terminals of Zhanjiang International Airport was finally nailed down.

According to Zhanjiang Urban Planning Bureau, a consortium of China Architecture Design Group and CPG Consultants Pte Ltd has outperformed 11 other teams and received the contract.

Located in Wuchuan, Zhanjiang International Airport is positioned to be a civil airport with regular domestic and international flights. Covering 57 hectares, its two terminals will mark off 22 contact stands and 11 remote stands for the aircrafts.

As planned, terminal one and terminal two will stand abreast, each with a comprehensive transport hub in front of them. Such design is highly adaptable and allows for different construction requirements in the future.

The transport hubs will be closely linked to the terminals, parking lots, railway stations, metro stations, long-distance coach stations and bus stations, aiming to realize seamless transfer between different means of transportation. The walking distance from the hub to its neighboring terminal is shorter than 100 meters.

The herringbone-patterned terminal resembles a seabird stretching its wings. The terminal stretches for 900 meters and accommodates up to 22 contact stands while enabling a smooth operation of the parking area.

Another highlight of the design lies in the adoption of "fire-sealing gable", a type of architectural element commonly used in the residences of Leizhou Peninsula. With the integration of circular arcs and lateritious grilles, the establishment intends to become a cultural calling card of the region.

Considering that Zhanjiang is a coastal city, indoor space of the terminals feature a heavy use of marine elements, such as shells, rocks and islands. Meanwhile, the external materials will be resistant to wind, rain and typhoon.
