By Xu Lili Updated: 2015-08-05

Minzhu neighborhood in Zhanjiang's Chikan district has launched the "Internet Plus home-based care system" project to provide convenience for the elderly people who live alone.

Staff workers at Minzhu neighborhood office and several volunteers sent a basket of vegetables to Zhang Yanian, an 86-year-old man who has been living alone on the Datong Street for many years.

It is difficult for him to go out to buy vegetables because of his illness and mobility problems.

There are more than 40,000 residents living in Minzhu neighborhood. Many of them are elderly people like Zhang. Inability to buy vegetables has turned into a common problem amongst the old people.

"In order to solve such a problem, we plan to integrate 'Internet Plus' with home-based care system in communities," said Wu Yushan, deputy director of Minzhu neighborhood office.

The vegetable delivery service is part of the project. Local enterprises will deliver free vegetables to more than 10 extremely poor and lonely elders. The elderly are able to order the service through telephone or the Internet at home.

"With the help of such modern information technologies as the mobile Internet, the elderly can now enjoy a new and relatively easy lifestyle without the limitations of time and space," said Zheng Hong, secretary of the Party Working Committee in Minzhu neighborhood office.

"The vegetable delivery service will become a new way in elderly home care," he stressed.
