Zhanjiang aquatic product enterprise granted US 'green card'

By Xu Lili Updated: 2015-06-25

Zhanjiang Fengyuan Aquatic Products Co, an aquatic product enterprise, has recently been granted "green card" by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has lifted the "Detention Without Physical Examination" order imposed on the company, increasing the number of Zhanjiang seafood companies under this status to eight.

In the first five months of 2015, Zhanjiang exported 2,002 batches of aquatic products valued at $250 million, 1,089 batches of which were to the US, at a value of $130 million.

The US is the second largest market for China's aquatic products exports, and the largest for aquatic products exports from Zhanjiang.

In 2007, the US food safety authority imposed "Detention Without Physical Examination" order on China's five kinds of aquatic products including shrimps, catfish, eels, dace and channel catfish, citing that the products failed the drug test. The order has not been fully annulled yet.

So far, only 18 aquatic product processing enterprises in China won US "green card", 10 of which are based in Guangdong province.
