No one would expect the champions of last year’s provincial football games should have come from this shabby sandy ground in a rural primary school - no grass lawn, no lines, and even no net. Nevertheless, a football legend is being written right here in the Gaowu Primary School.

The small rural school, located in Gaowu village of Wuchuan county in Zhanjiang, rose to fame in Guangdong province last year when the schoolboys helped the Wuchuan team win the laurel in the provincial football games. People are amazed by the boys’ star performance, and even more curious about how they could have been trained to be so excellent in such a small village school.

On the sunny afternoon of March 20, when the warm spring is fondling Zhanjiang with its gentle sunshine and breeze, some schoolboys were practicing dribbling, passing and shooting the ball on the play ground in the Gaowu Primary School.

The boys soon retreated from the dusty ground when the bell rang, sweating and dirty. But no one seemed to care about that, indeed, these playful boys laughed heartily while playing football.

“The local villagers’ favorite sports event is football,” the school football coach said, “that’s why it has been a traditional sports program in our school,” he said.

Chen Shangguan, the 30 something coach, has a sun-tanned face. He was a soccer major when studying in college, and came to Wuchuan to teach children play football after graduation. Chen said the school had arranged a football course that gave one lesson per week. “We want more children to enjoy playing football, and make football part of school life,” he said.

Chen looked at the boys as if a farmer overseeing the growing crops. He pointed to a small boy in the team, “his name is Gao Shangming, he can juggle the ball more than a hundred times,” Chen said with a proud smile.

Gao Shangming, a 13-year-old boy with a height of 145 cm, scored 10 points as a forward in Wuchuan team in last year’s provincial football games.
