Zhanjiang ranks high in China’s top 100 smart cities

Zhanjiang ranks 13th among the “Top 100 Smart Cities in China”, according to the Blue Paper on the Development of (China)International Smarter Cities released recently.

The blue book, jointly compiled by the Xinhuanet and the ETIRI under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ranked Zhanjiang only second to Shenzhen and Guangzhou among all cities in Guangdong.

The development indexes for evaluating smart cities include basic indexes, informatization indexes and supporting indexes. The top 100 cities on the GDP ranking in China were designated as candidate cities for smart city evaluation, which would be subject to smart city development evaluation.

The basic indexes include the social development indexes such as GDP and population. The informatization indexes looks at the quality and quantity concerning information infrastructure construction.

The supporting indexes include the education, healthcare and scientific development indexes, which shows the social changes brought about by informatization.

All the indexes come from each city’s official annual report. Zhanjiang has given much attention to smart city development factor in recent years. It became the first city to connect all buses to free public Wifi network in November 2013.

The city started to operate the public bicycle network system, and all public bicycle stations have access to free Wifi.
