After implementation of the serious illness insurance plan, to date, the number of urban and rural residents receiving insurance benefits has risen to 400,000 in the county of Dabu, Guangdong province, signaling progress in the local government's efforts to improve people’s livelihoods.

According to the new plan, the insured residents will receive health allowances when diagnosed with one of the serious illnesses listed in the insurance policy.

For example, a considerable amount of money has been given to Huliao town’s two villagers to cover the cost of nasopharynx cancer care.

The total amount of the region’s serious illness insurance has reached 2.2 million yuan ($360,000), which has greatly relieved the economic burden on patients.
