College freshmen receive poverty alleviation funds

A total of 97 newly-enrolled college students from poverty-stricken families in Dabu county, Guangdong province, received a total of 350,000 yuan ($57,190) from the Shenzhen branch of Construction Bank of China (CBC) before the school year started, local authorities have reported.

This is the seventh time that the bank has given financial support to poverty-stricken college freshmen. A total of 1.72 million yuan has been donated so far to 646 students in need.

With firm support of Wang Yang, the former provincial Party chief, June 30 was designated as "Guangdong Poverty Alleviation Day", the official day of poverty alleviation in Guangdong, in 2010. Since then, poverty alleviation campaigns have been carried out in Dabu county.
