Updated: 2015-03-04

The switch-on ceremony of the 13th Mawei-Matsu (Taiwan) Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the Lunar New Year) celebration was held in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian province, on Mar 2, with 116 illuminated light sets providing a feast for the eyes of residents in the city.

Liu Cheng-ying, the magistrate of Taiwan's Lienchiang county, said at the ceremony that the Mawei-Matsu Lantern Festival had provided a great platform for cross-Straits exchanges and communications.

"Mawei and Matsu share similar customs, dialects and life styles, and we should strengthen exchanges and cooperation," Liu said, adding that in the future, more favorable policies will be rolled out to attract tourists in the mainland to visit beautiful Matsu.

The lanterns presented at the Festival were designed in different shapes and styles, featuring cross-Straits communication and the Spring Festival spirit, stretching along a one-km-long street in Fuzhou's East Riverside Park.

The year 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Mawei district. The Lantern Festival also featured economic, political, cultural and environmental development of Mawei district.
