To promote Min opera on a larger scale, the troupe announced it will go on tour in May to theaters across smaller towns in Pingtan.
The troupe’s business soared in the past year, with about 220 commercial shows staged in the province from last May to February, meaning one every other day, according to troupe leader Wu Zhaoxiong.
He attributed the business boom to hard-working and versatile actors and actresses who appeal to audiences with their singing, dancing and sometimes showcasing some kung fu action.
The troupe also performed a play, Lin Chang’s Appeal, in November, which has won praise from many fans across the province, securing a berth in an opera gala next year, he added.
The play tells the story about Lin Chang, a local Pingtan civilian, petitioning to the imperial court for public tax breaks during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD).
