An exhibition shining a spotlight on the profound culture of Fuzhou, capital city of Fujian province, was staged in Malaysia on Feb 3.

The exhibition featured a selection of pictures that depict the city's historical evolution and development, as well as a collection of intangible cultural heritage items like stone carvings, tea sets and silverware.

It was the second time Fujian has held a cultural promotion event in Malaysia; the first was the opening of a culture demonstration center in the country in August last year.

Fujian, a key node along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, has been actively involving itself in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

In late 2017, the local government rolled out a plan to strengthen cultural communication and exchanges with the countries along the Road by establishing a series of culture demonstration centers. Malaysia's is the first one.

A coastal province in Southeast China, Fujian is the hometown of a large number of overseas Chinese. Statistics show that roughly 15 million overseas Chinese can trace their ancestral roots to the region, and more than 70 percent of them are living in Southeast Asian countries.

The province is set to give full play to those advantages and promote its traditional culture among that special group and the local residents in the relevant countries.

Amid the forthcoming Chinese New Year, a celebratory performance is scheduled to be held in the Malaysia center.

So far, in addition to the one in Malaysia, Fujian has also set up a similar facility in the Philippines and plans to establish another five to eight in the future, local authorities revealed.
