Updated: 2014-10-10

Wang Guoqiang, vice-minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, led a delegation to Guangdong from Oct 6-7 to supervise and inspect local dengue prevention and control work. The visit will carry out the guidance of the central government and the State Council. The supervision team listened to a work report on dengue prevention and control in Guangzhou and Foshan as well as the rest of Guangdong province. The team made it to residential communities, schools, hospitals, and centers for disease control and prevention to check the implementation of control and prevention measures. It also proposed suggestions on strengthening prevention and control work.

Wang Guoqiang pointed out that dengue fever cases were mainly concentrated in Guangzhou this year, while being contained on a small scale in Yunnan, Fujian and Guangxi at the moment. Guangdong has seen severe outbreaks of the disease. It faces pressure from local and international infections. The recent weather conditions in Guangdong make it easier for mosquitoes to spread dengue fever, so the prevention and control situation remains grim. Recently, under the strong leadership of the Guangdong government, the whole province, especially Guangzhou and Foshan, has taken great efforts to publicize disease prevention and control and strengthen mosquito elimination and medical treatment measures to enhance epidemic prevention and control.

Wang stressed that the Guangdong government needs to strengthen implementation of various dengue prevention and control measures. First, it should improve the joint defense and control mechanism, and clarify infectious diseases prevention and control responsibilities among regions, departments, units and individuals. Second, it should carry out an in-depth patriotic health campaign, adhere to environmental health regulations and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Third, the government should strengthen epidemic monitoring, analysis and treatment. Fourth, it should strengthen mosquito density monitoring, make rational choices of drugs, and carry out mosquito elimination effect evaluation to ensure scientific anti-mosquito work in a timely manner.

Fifth, it should improve dengue case management to accomplish early discovery, early diagnosis, early report and early treatment, especially to strengthen treatment of serious cases and minimize the death rate. Sixth, it should continue to carry out publicity work towards key areas and demographic groups and make innovations to improve publicity. Seventh, the government should make full use of the patriotic health campaign to strengthen professional prevention and control and public participation, forming a group control mechanism. Eighth, it should make full use of traditional Chinese medicine in dengue prevention and control based on the principle of integrating Chinese and Western elements and resources, following unified leadership and conducting close cooperation.

Officials from the Patriotic Health Campaign Committee Office and the National Health and Family Planning Commission's disease control and medical reform departments have made four special supervisions on dengue prevention and control in Guangdong since September. They have sent experts to Yunnan and Fujian to give technical guidance. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention also sent experts to Guangzhou to guide prevention and control work in Guangdong during National Day.
