Artificial intelligence company SenseTime has established its Chinese headquarters and global research and development headquarters in Shanghai, pledging to apply more of its technologies to the city.

The decision was announced during the second World Artificial Intelligence Conference over the weekend, when Shanghai mayor Ying Yong unveiled the nameplates for the newly established entities.

The company also signed an agreement to intensify its work with the municipality.

CEO Xu Li said the company will continue to develop a number of applications in Shanghai covering transport, retail and payment systems.

SenseTime and Shanghai International Automobile City Group are working together to improve the latter’s shuttle bus service operations, driver management and passenger experience by using SenseTime’s facial-recognition technology.

Powered by its indigenous driving monitor system, the solution is capable of recognizing driver identity, fatigue level, distraction level and gives appropriate alerts to ensure safe driving.

The upgrade will gradually expand to all routes in the future.

SenseTime is one of the world’s most valuable firms after raising $620 million in May 2018.

It offers AI features covering facial recognition, medical-image recognition and smart driving.
