Jilin deputies focus on poverty alleviation

2020 is being seen as the decisive year for poverty alleviation in China and how to help people live a better life has become a prime concern of deputies to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) from Northeast China's Jilin province, according to local officials.

Talking about poverty alleviation, Jilin deputies who have been working on the front line to achieve it have things to say.

Deputy Gao Guiying said that her village has developed a series of rural tourism services, ranging from fruit and vegetable picking to rural tours and deer meat products.

Gao said the village is currently paying attention to ensuring that its people are living a better life and that no one will return to poverty.

Deputy Wang Yanfeng said her village has offered different help to impoverished households with different needs. The village has also stepped up its efforts to attract investment and has helped villagers to get employed locally, she said.

Moving forwards, Wang said she hoped that more professionals in the agriculture sector would come to the village and help its development.

Deputy Gu Fengjie, meanwhile, said how to take advantage of its location at the foot of Changbai Mountain is what her village is concerned and villagers are now raising cattle, sheep and planting ginseng to make a profit.

Yang Chunting, deputy director of the office of poverty alleviation and development of Jilin province, said in recent years Jilin province has introduced a raft of measures to reduce poverty and following years of effort, the province has seen great achievements.

The official said that over the past four years, Jilin has lifted 1.91 million impoverished people out of penury, reducing the rate of destitution to 0.07 percent from 13.4 percent and all 1,489 poor villages have shaken off privation.

Currently the province is focusing on ensuring no people return to poverty, as well as accelerating rural revitalization, the official added.
