Federal Labor deputy leader Julia Gillard is among the contenders in a men's magazine poll to find Australia's 50 sexiest women.

The 45-year-old has been included in a field featuring Elle Macpherson, Crown Princess Mary, Kylie Minogue and retired Test cricketer Shane Warne's former wife, Simone.

While Ms Gillard made a list of 87 contenders for FHM magazine's "50 Sexiest Aussie Babes" survey, another well-known redhead Nicole Kidman missed out.

A spokeswoman for FHM said more than 5000 votes had been cast already in the survey with results to be released on February 5.

The list of contenders includes the usual array of soap stars and supermodels.

But convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby makes the cut along with fellow one-time Bali prison inmate Michelle Leslie.

Sarah Murdoch, who co-hosts Nine's Today show, is vying for the top 50 along with former Today Tonight anchor Naomi Robson.

Kidman might have been excluded, but Australians on the list with a Hollywood profile are represented by Naomi Watts and Toni Collette.

Model Lara Bingle, alleged to have had a fling with Carlton AFL star Brendan Favola, is on the list along with the footballer's wife, Alex.

Sports identities listed include retired swimmer Giaan Rooney, Winter Olympics gold medallist Alisa Camplin, ironwoman Candice Falzon, 800m runner Tamsyn Lewis and mountain biker Niki Gudex.

FHM deputy editor Ben Smithurst said: "Australia has the most beautiful women in the world, as well as the most talented.

"Despite constant drought, massive firestorms and bushland teeming with incredibly poisonous things, they'll always make Australia great."

The list of contenders can be seen at http://www.fhm.com.au while readers are invited to add other nominations.
