Online literature has become one of the most prosperous creative industries in China, accumulating massive financial value in the past decade.

On Saturday, a group of industry professionals gathered to discuss the opportunities and challenges related to online literature and its multimedia adaptations at the China Online Literature and Digital Publication Forum, in Beijing.

Qin Xuan, industry cooperation department director of Cloudary Corporation, says that online literature has inherent advantages particularly when adapted into film and TV.

Its interactive characteristics attract online readers to eventually become viewers of film and TV adaptations. Cloudary Corporation is China's largest copyright owner of online literature.

According to Jun Shi, producer at Beijing Galloping Horse Film and TV Production, his company has had mixed experiences in online literature adaptation.

"It's difficult for production companies to find satisfactory scriptwriters," he says.

"A novelist will not naturally become a competent playwright. It calls for a fairly long training process."

The forum is part of the Fourth China International Copyright Expo, held in Beijing from June 22-24, which is among the side events of the 2012 WIPO Diplomatic Conference on the Protection of Audiovisual Performances.
