Sale breaks record in Bangladesh's biggest book fair

Sale has broken record at Ekushey Book Fair, the biggest book fair of Bangladesh which is being held in capital Dhaka.

The month-long fair, started on Feb. 1, is to commemorate the language movement which took place in 1952 in Eastern Pakistan, now Bangladesh.

Within 23 days of the fair until Wednesday, Bangla Academy, the fair organizer and also the biggest book publisher, has sold books of more than 5 million taka (about 71,429 U.S. dollars) which is the highest amount of selling since the fair began in 1978 as an annual event.

One Bangla Academy official told Xinhua Wednesday that English- Bengali dictionary is the highest selling publication. Almost 10, 000 English-Bengali dictionaries, 6,500 Bengali-English dictionaries and 4,000 other dictionaries have already been sold.

Around 522 stalls to accommodate around 350 different types of companies, including 167 book publishers, attended the fair.

Bangladesh Academy expected books worth around 250 million taka (3.57 million U.S. dollars) will be sold this year at the fair.

Around 4,000 new publications are brought to the fair for the visitors and book-lovers.

The organizer expected the number of visitors to the one-month fair to reach 5 million.
