Hou Hsiao-hsien to cast mainland actors in his new film

Taiwan director Hou Hsiao-hsien will cast mainland actors in his new film Nie Yinniang.

The film's lead actor and actress, Chang Chen and Shu Qi are both from Taiwan, but mainland actors will definitely join the project, Hou said at a forum on the works of mainland director Xiao Feng in Beijing recently.

Hou has long called for Taiwan directors to study and explore the mainland market.

Talking about Xiao's films, mainly the "rural trilogy" about modern China's countryside population, Hou shares his belief in filmmaking: to start from one's own feelings and intuition rather than any rule.

A veteran and respected filmmaker in Taiwan, Hou has focused on arthouse cinema and his works present a panorama of modern history of Taiwan. Xiao, a classmate of Zhang Yimou in Beijing Film Academy, is a cinematographer-turned-director known for his vivid depiction of grassroots people.
