'Deng son' appears in court

A man who allegedly claimed to be a son of the late leader Deng Xiaoping and who then allegedly cheated two people appeared in Fengtai district court on Monday.

The 46-year-old, surnamed Tian, allegedly cheated a victim in Fengtai district out of a Nokia phone worth 5,300 yuan, a Rado watch, two bottles of Hennessy XO worth 7,600 yuan, two cartons of Chunghua cigarettes worth 1,100 yuan, tea and tea pots between May and July 2008.

The court heard he also cheated 48,000 yuan out of a man who wanted to open a coalmine and who needed to get a license. The court will deliver a verdict later.

Petty robber jailed, fined

A migrant worker who robbed a man of 220 yuan and $2 to pay back his friend, was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 16,000 yuan at Shunyi district court, the court said yesterday.

The court heard that the man, surnamed Che, borrowed 4,000 yuan from a friend in 2008. He was pushed to pay back the money when Spring Festival approached and robbed a driver at a department store in Shunyi district on the night of Jan 1. After grabbing the 220 yuan and $2 from the victim, he asked the man to get him an additional 50,000 yuan in 20 minutes. The driver subdued Che with the help of friends.

Cleaner compensated

A cleaner who had been working overtime for nine years and who was so busy he could not return to his hometown sued his employer at Shijingshan district court and was awarded 11,844 yuan in compensation, the court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Zeng, worked at a trash station between 2000 and 2009 and had never taken one day off. His employer refused to pay his overtime after he resigned.

Zeng had asked the court for 70,000 yuan.

No Valentine's weddings

Couples will not be able to marry on Valentine's Day this year because Feb 14 is part of the Chinese New Year holiday period and staff in the registry will not be working, reported Beijing Daily.

Staff working at registry said marital happiness should not depend on the date of the wedding but in the attitude toward love, marriage and family that follows.

Long term for kidnappers

A man, surnamed Ning, and his accomplice, named Wang, have been jailed for robbing Ning's former boss of five million yuan.

The court heard the robbery took place after Ning quit his job.

Ning was sentenced to 19 years and six months while Wang got 14 years and six months, said Daxing district court.

Ning had worked as the victim's driver before he kidnapped him and asked his family for the 5 million yuan ransom. Both Ning and Wang were arrested the next day.

Students freed from lift

Eight girls and five boys were stuck in a lift in a building in Sanlitun for 40 minutes on Wednesday before being rescued by estate managers.

Nobody was injured, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The lift was being overhauled when the students used it and it lost power between the second and third floor of the building.

The students had been making their way from a farewell party to a billiard room on the fifth floor at the moment.

Migrants get support

The first training school in Beijing to offer psychological help to migrant workers opened on Monday at a construction site near Beijing Workers' Gymnasium.

It will offer courses that teach workers how to identify psychological diseases, how to deal with psychological problems and how to avoid taking extreme action.

Organizers, doctors from Huilongguan hospital, said they will offer five courses and set up 10 more schools in the city this year.
