Timeless creations

Many high-end watch brands have launched new designs in time for the New Year. Beijing Weekend Guide selects some of the best in town.

Swiss watchmaker Movado has released its latest Artists' Series, a suite of six colorful dials designed by American artist Kenny Scharf, known for his cartoon-style paintings. His works are something between pop culture and fine art.

The six watches he designed are Movado Time, Blurple Time, Universal Time, Starring the Star, Ontime and Time Flies. Each one features strange patterns, pictures and colors. For instance, the watch Time Flies features a weird flying bird picture on the dial, which might remind you of something in Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas.

Movado's Artists' Series dates back to 1988, when pop artist Andy Warhol designed a special limited edition Times/5 collection for the brand.

The renowned French jeweler and watchmaker Cartier has launched 10 high-end timepieces this year. The Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Flying Watch is the best of them.

This watch is going to be launched at la Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva next month. It is a "skeleton", as its name suggests. The watch does not have a dial, only the numerals crafted in gold.

Cartier says there are only 100 of these watches in the world market, and in China, there might be no more than 10. So if you are really interested, hurry up.
