Uncorking new desires

Bo Barret, a winemaker at the Chateau Montelena Winery in the Napa Valley, United States, came to Beijing last week for a media wine tasting and dinner at Maison Boulud. The tasting marks the entrance of the high-end wine into China.

The history of the winery dates back to 1882, making it one of the oldest in the US. Barret's China tour also covered Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macao. It was his first visit to China.

Until the end of the 20th century, most connoisseurs believed the French would always reign supreme as the source of the best wines.

But in 1976, a blind tasting in Paris of Californian and French wines judged by prominent French wine experts, revealed the "shocking" truth that the US produced wines were on a par with the world's best. The best white wine at the tasting was Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay.

The winning winery in the famous 1976 "Judgement of Paris" tasting is now available in China through distributors in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
