'Stone Cold Steve Bisto' wins gravy bout

Joel Hicks has been crowned the winner of the World Gravy Wrestling Championships at the Rose 'n' Bowl pub in Stacksteads, Lancashire.

The 30-year-old barrister, who competed as Stone Cold Steve Bisto, won the event at his third attempt, beating last year's victor Danny 'Mad Dog' Carr in the last round.

Hicks said: "The final was really tough and it is much more difficult than you think. My technique was really just to grab hold of the guy and hope for the best."

Sponsor Bisto provided 2,000 litres of out-of-date gravy for the contest, with money raised by the event donated to the East Lancashire Hospice.

Landlady Carol Lowe said: "We normally have to make the gravy ourselves, which is a bit of a nightmare, but this year Bisto stepped in."

Last-minute entrant 23-year-old Emma Slater from Oldham won the women's competition dressed as Mrs Christmas.
