Lake with longest name gets spelling fix

Spelling mistakes in signs to Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg in Webster, Massachusetts will be corrected after years of complaints from locals, it has emerged.

The signs on Route 12 near Oxford and Route 193 near Thompson will now be altered after a unanimous decision from the board of directors of the Webster-Dudley-Oxford Chamber of Commerce, telegram.com reports.

There are around two dozen variations of the spelling of Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, but none are reported to be the same as that used on the road signs.

It was claimed that the most commonly used 45-character name - the longest place name in the US - was wrongly spelled with an "o" instead of "u" at letter 20 and an "h" instead of "n" at letter 38.

State representative Paul J. Kujawski said: "We can contact the people who were involved with it and see what we can do."

Owner of Webster Lake Gifts Carla Manzi said: "I want to get my little paintbrush because it would be very easy to fix."
