Listings: Beijing Exhibitions

The nation's largest ever exhibition of top-quality arts and crafts works are on show. Divided into 10 categories, including jade carving, wood sculpture, embroidery, ceramics, lacquer wares and metal works, the 350 exhibits have been picked from more than 2,000 entries and are creations from the country's most prestigious master craftsmen, says Wang Shan of the China Arts and Crafts Association, a key organizer of the event.

Two solo shows are ongoing during the same period at Gallery TN. German artist Jorg Immendorff is representative of neo-behaviorism, inheriting the traditional German approach of behaviorism, adding powerful brush strokes and dark color schemes. Ren Rong has lived in Germany for many years. He blends Chinese elements, including calligraphy, paper-cut, seal cutting and leather silhouettes into his paintings.

Bright colors, joyous themes and lively compositions are featured in an engraving exhibition that gathers work by accomplished artists such as America's Andy Warhol, Britain's Julian Opie, China's Cai Guoqiang and Feng Zhengjie, as well as Japan's Takashi Murakami, Chiho Aoshima, Chiharu Nishizawa and Konoike Tomoko.

The recent works of Indonesian Budi Kustarto, Among Others, re-create a mixture of nostalgia and freedom of historical interpretation. Through the depiction of the human body, he tries to trespass on the development of value and cultural myths.

Three exhibitions are being held. The group show, The Game Is not Over, introduces eight young Chinese artists to visitors. The video work by WAZA Group, named No Wave, narrates a conversation between human beings and the forest. The third one, The Past from the Future, displays ceramic works by South Korean artist Choi Ji-man, under the theme of animals.
