Terry O’Neill Photography Awards Go Global and Mobile

A major photography award can set photographers’ careers on the fast track, introducing their work to leading figures in the industry.

The Terry O’Neill Photography Award is in its 8th year and is recognised as one of the world’s leading photographic awards attracting thousands of entries each year. This year we are taking the Award to the next level to make it the most innovative, accessible and valuable photography prize, providing the winners and runners-ups with levels of PR and publicity that set a new benchmark for other photography awards.

The Award launches with a fresh website and a mobile device category sponsored by The Royal Photographic Society. A new distinguished panel of judges from the arts and media are backed by an international publicity campaign to attract entries from Berlin to Beijing.

The winners will have their work showcased in Terry O’Neill exhibitions in London and overseas and will be featured in the Sunday Times Magazine. £6500 of cash prizes can be won. The winner will receive £3000 and two runners-up £2000 and £1000 respectively. The winner of the mobile device category wins £500.

Deadline for entries is 30 November 2013: images must have been shot between 1 January and 30 November 2013. Standard cost of entry is £25 for a minimum of 3 and up to a maximum of 10 images. Student cost is just £10.

The line-up of judges this year introduces Award entrants’ work to a distinguished panel of figures from film, advertising, global image reproduction, publishing, academia and the Royal Society of Photography. The judges are

• Terry O’Neill

• Chair: Jon Jones, Director of Photography, Sunday Times Magazine

• Lord Puttnam, film-maker and advertising industry pioneer

• Aidan Sullivan, VP, Getty Images,

• Nina Berman, Associate Professor Columbia University, New York

• Dr Michael Pritchard, Director-General, Royal Photography Society,

• Bobbi Baker-Burrows, Director of Photography, Time-Life Books

• Victoria Broackes, Victoria and Albert Museum (Curator of the David Bowie Exhibition)

• Rosie Arnold, Deputy Executive Creative Director, Bartle, BogleHegarty Advertising

Dr Michael Pritchard says:

The Royal Photographic Society is delighted to sponsor The Terry O’Neill Award and specifically the category for mobile devices. The Society doesn’t discriminate between different methods of taking pictures and supports new technologies that bring photography to a younger audience making photography more accessible and spontaneous. This Award breaks new ground and adds a fresh and exciting dimension to the photography Award arena - something we welcome and support.

Terry O’Neill is famous for photographing the frontline of fame for more than half a century, snapping icons such as Bridget Bardot, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and most recently Nelson Mandela and the late Amy Winehouse.

Terry O’Neill says:

The Award is designed to give brave new talent a springboard to recognition and success and the chance to be exhibited and published.

Today there is so much background noise and competition the brightest and best new photographers can easily go unrecognised. But as a photography student how do you afford Award entry fees that can be as high as £50? This Award provides a level playing field to professional and student photographers alike, offering a reduced entry fee of just £10. Many Awards do not offer a discount to students and where they do the cost can still be prohibitive.
