Trace of years

Today Art Museum and Oriental Art Master magazine are co-presenting The Trace of Years - a solo exhibition from artist Diao Qingchun. The exhibition covers Diao's major works from his Mural and Shan Shun Landscape series, as well as the most recent Abstract and Fission series. The artist expresses the power of nature through his man-made wonders in an abstract form.

Ancient chairs

An exhibition of ancient classical Chinese seats opened in the Beijing World Art Museum on Dec 12. The exhibition showcases 100 ancient Chinese seats that date back almost 1,000 years. It has six categories that include the history of classical Chinese seatings and how they evolved. The exhibition aims to raise awareness about the cultural and aesthetic value of classic Chinese furniture, at a time when the material is more emphasized than craftsmanship.

Romantic drama

Love Message from Unknown Lover, a new theatrical drama, will be staged in Beijing and Shanghai. Adapted from a novel of the same name by Kevin Tsai Kang-yung, a writer and television host from Taiwan, the story revolves around heroine Doudian, who cannot endure her secret love and makes some brave decisions. Tsai Kang-yung says it is not only his first romantic novel, but also the first time his work has been adapted for the stage. Starring actress Li Sheng and actor Li Jiahang, the show will tour nationally in 2014.

Voices of ethnicity

The voices of China's ethnic groups will come together for an end-of-the-year concert that promises to represent the unique characters of China's diversity. The website 56zuren.com, which is devoted to music from different ethnicities, recently launched a vote to rank its most popular musicians. More than 30 singers from 20 ethnic groups across the country from the poll will perform at the concert on Dec 30. The singers will tour the country next year.

Designed to inspire

Graphic designer Yang Linqing is holding an exhibition in Beijing, displaying the books, posters and magazines he has created and contributed to over the past 10 years. Born in Chongqing, the 38-year-old designer graduated from the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University before going to France to further his study. He believes graphic design, which influences readers visually, functions like farm equipment, turning bare land into rich farmland.

Shanghai

Young artists' show

A new exhibition showcases representative artworks of more than 40 young artists from the Long Museum collection, covering paintings, sculptures and installations. It aims to present the creative works of artists born after 1970. Known as "post-1970s and post-1980s", these artists were raised at a time of Chinese reform and opening-up, and have been affected by the changes brought by globalization.

Ring in the New Year

Life Hub@Jinqiao, a large shopping complex in Shanghai's Pudong area, will greet the New Year with a live outdoor concert. The duet Man Power, and singer Jonathan Chang, both from Taiwan, will perform at Garden Square with Zhang Jia, a singer based in Shanghai, and Liang Yizhen, who rose to stardom on the TV talent show Asian Wave. The concert will end at midnight, when the artists will celebrate the start of 2014.

French connection

China Art Museum, Shanghai and Musee des Annees Trente de Boulogne-Billancourt, France are presenting the exhibition Turning Point - French Art of the 1930s: Masterpieces from Musee des Annees Trente de Boulogne-Billancourt at Floor 33-M at China Art Museum, Shanghai. The exhibition of four chapters gives viewers a tastes of the richness and variety of French art at the time modern art was flourishing in the first half of the 20th century. The chapter about art deco and Chinese-French artistic intersection reveals the relevance of modern French art to China and Shanghai.

Shenzhen

SantaCon festivities

Shenzhen will be one of the 321 cities in 44 countries taking part in SantaCon, a worldwide party for those who want an unforgettable Christmas. Participants are asked to pay 150 yuan ($25) per person to enter the event, which covers a Santa Claus outfit, gifts for children, a buffet and a cocktail at Coco Park's Vita club following the afternoon parade.

Guangzhou

Blue sea in song

Explore the blue ocean on Christmas Eve with a live performance of the soundtracks from BBC and Discovery channel's award-winning documentary series The Blue Planet at Guangzhou Opera House. Scenes from the documentaries, such as footage of whales and dolphins playing and mystical sea creatures from the deep, will be projected on a giant screen during the concert. The show promises to be a feast of sight and sound.

Bossa nova diva

Lisa Ono, a popular Japanese-Brazilian bossa nova singer, will delight audiences with her warm, calming voice at her Christmas concert at Xinghai Concert Hall. Known as the Queen of Bossa Nova in China, she made her name in the country with her cover of La Vie en Rose for Feng Xiaogang's film A World without Thieves and Quizas in Karwai Wong's film In the Mood for Love. Ono will also dip into her repertoire from the past 20 years of her singing career. She will perform in Beijing on Jan 1.

Magical Christmas show

Louis Lu Chen, the popular Chinese magician, is turning Poly Theater into a magical world of illusion and mystery. The audience will be invited to perform with Chen on stage. The show will be a magician's treat for the whole family over the Christmas holiday.
