On the last day of his three-day inspection trip to Hong Kong, State leader Zhang Dejiang reiterated that abiding by the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and the Basic Law was the best way forward for the city.

He made the remarks during a 20-minute speech to more than 200 local political heavyweights and business leaders, including Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.

Zhang, who heads the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, urged Hong Kong people to support the CE and the SAR government, saying that would help maintain the territory's prosperity and stability.

Before leaving the city, Zhang paid a visit to an elderly care facility where he was warmly welcomed and chatted with some seniors taking part in a chess game and a tea art activity.

Later he toured a public housing estate under construction and praised the SAR government's efforts in providing affordable public housing for underprivileged people.

Zhang flew back to Beijing at around noon.

In summing up Zhang's inspection tour, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Zhang Xiaoming said the top legislator was satisfied with the work of the CE and his administration.

Hong Kong people have reacted very positively to the three-day visit - the first visit to the city by a top State leader since former president Hu Jintao came four years ago for the swearing-in of the CE.
