'Occupy' activists appear in court

Four activists who played vital roles in last year's illegal "Occupy Central" protests - including the local student activist group Scholarism's convenor Joshua Wong Chi-fung and People Power legislator Albert Chan Wai-yip - appeared in court on Friday. This was to attend a pre-trial review on police obstruction charges. The alleged offenses took place on June 11 last year, when they participated in a protest outside the central government's liaison office in Sai Wan and burned booklets of the white paper issued by the Information Office of the State Council on the practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy in Hong Kong.

Man charged with killing sex worker

A 20-year-old man arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killing of a 45-year-old sex worker in Yau Ma Tei was charged in Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts on Friday. No plea was taken. The case was adjourned to Nov 6, pending autopsy and other forensic reports. The court heard that the man admitted under caution that he stabbed the sex worker, a two-way permit holder, in her subdivided apartment. This was because, before approaching the 45-year-old, he was annoyed by the refusal of another sex worker in the same building to spend the night with him. The man fled the scene afterward and was arrested after he attempted suicide by jumping into the sea.

JR sought on Avenue of Stars contract

Two people filed a judicial review (JR) application to challenge the plan to renew the management contract for the Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade. The Town Planning Board awarded a new 20-year contract for management of the Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade to the existing operator of Avenue of Stars without re-tendering. The promenade is also to undergo a face-lift. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department earlier explained that the management of the tourist attraction is not profitable. It will be overseen by an independent committee.
