Hong Kong generates several different types of waste, and each has its own handling requirements.

Municipal solid waste (MSW), comprising domestic solid waste from households, commercial and industrial sources, forms the major focus of the Environment Protection Department (EPD) as it accounts for 66.84 percent or 8,996 tons of total waste in Hong Kong based on 2011 statistics.

Of the MSW figure, the domestic waste was 5,973 tons (66.4 percent), commercial waste 2,360 tons (26.23 percent) and industrial waste 663 tons (7.37 percent). About 3,600 tons of food waste produced in HK daily - represents nearly 40 percent of all MSW disposal daily. (According to the EPD, a year of food waste equates to 100,000 double-decker buses by weight).

Construction waste accounted for 3,331 tons in 2011, and special wastes 1,131 tons.
