HKU honors celebrities
Unofficial Executive Council member Anna Wu Hung-yuk and banker Robin Chan Yau-hing are among 10 distinguished residents who received honorary fellowships from the University of Hong Kong on Thursday.
Wu also chairs the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority and Chan is chairman of Asia Financial Holdings and Asia Insurance and vice-chairman of the People's Insurance Company of China (Hong Kong).
The other eight recipients are: Paul Cheung Kwok-wing, chairman and co-founder of Kingboard Chemical Holdings; Stanley Chun Yu-lun, founding chairman of Adsale Group; Laurence Hou Lee-tsun, head of the Histopathology and Cytology Division at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital; Gold Bauhinia Star awardee Mak Chai-kwong; Patrick Poon Sun-cheong, chairman of Harvest SCP Group Company; David Sin Wai-kin, chairman of Myer Jewelry Manufacturer; mathematician Siu Man-keung; and Ronald Leslie Zimmern, chairman of the Foundation for Genomics and Population Health.
Loan sharks use women as bait
The police have arrested 24 people, including two women, and broken up a loansharking syndicate using attractive young women as bait.
The suspects, aged 17 to 49, were rounded up in an operation launched early on Wednesday morning, and the hunt continues for another believed-to-be core ring member.
They are being held on suspicion of illegal money lending activities, false imprisonment and money laundering.
The police said the victims were lured by young women they had met online and who would accompany them to Macao to gamble.
They were offered high-interest loans after their luck ran out at the gaming table, and beaten up when they failed to repay the loans.
Man found dead in apartment
A man in his 40s was found dead in an apartment in Wong Tai Sin Thursday afternoon.
His body was found in the flat in Kwai Tung House, Tung Tau Estate at about 1 pm.
The police have yet to ascertain whether there were suspicious circumstances.
Elderly hit by car in Mong Kok
An elderly man was injured after being knocked down by a car while crossing the road in Mong Kok on Thursday.
He was struck at the junction of Nathan and Mong Kok Roads at about 11 am.
The man was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with injuries.
Trio ambush security guard
Three men bound and gagged a security guard before making off with welding equipment worth HK$6,000 at Lok Ma Chau on Wednesday night.
The victim told the police he was ambushed by the trio, believed to be in their 30s, while on patrol at a parking lot in Tai Sing Wai.
He was tied up and stuffed into a container but managed to free himself later.
