'Auntie' jailed in sex blackmail

The female conspirator in the gay sex blackmail of a senior member of a religious organization was sentenced to five years in prison in the District Court on Thursday.

Li Dora Kay, 59, was convicted of two counts of conspiracy to blackmail for scheming with a Chinese University of Hong Kong doctoral student, Cheung Ka-wo, to extort more than HK$6.3 million from the victim and his religious organization in 2009.

Cheung was sentenced to four years in prison in 2010.

Judge Douglas Yau said Li had played a leading role in the scheme.

Under caution, Li admitted to the police that she suggested that Cheung secretly film the gay sex with the victim and instructed Cheung what to say when they met with the victim and the head of the religious organization.

Li is not related to Cheung but he called her "auntie".

The two were introduced by the victim. Li had gained the man's trust because he thought she was shrewd.

Principal backs school action

The principal of Tung Chung Catholic School defended on Thursday the school's disciplinary measures against a 17-year-old boy who later leapt to his death in front of 600 teachers and students, during a school assembly on May 24, 2010.

At the coroner's inquest into the death of Wong Ling-fung, Principal Lau Chong Yuen said Wong was given a demerit according to the guideline set by the Education Bureau.

The measure was "positive and educational", rather than punitive, he said.

Wong was punished after he openly criticized a teacher and classmates on May 7, 2010.

Lau denied the school had tried to make Wong drop out.

Instead, when Wong's family raised the possibility, the school declined, saying it was better for the protection of the psychotic student.
